Das Stück folgt der römischen Tradition, besondere Ereignisse oder Verdienste des Kaiser auf Sesterzen darzustellen und so propagandistisch zu verbreiten. Ab dem 15. Jahrhundert und noch weit darüber hinaus ist es sehr populär, nicht nur die antiken Stücke nachzuahmen, sondern auch Medaillen, die in Größe und Gewicht den antiken Sesterzen entsprechen, auf zeitgenössische Ereignisse zu prägen beziehungsweise zu gießen. Diese nach ihrem ersten Entstehungsort Paduaner genannten Stücke waren damals und sind auch heute noch sehr beliebt.
